AU High Level Delegation to Burundi conclusion statement

Our High Level Delegation comprising His Excellencies the Presidents of Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, South Africa, and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has concluded its visit to Burundi.

We have spent the last two days meeting with various stakeholders comprising the Burundi government, political parties and civil society soliciting their views about the political situation here in Burundi.

We are pleased with the participation and contributions of all these sectors.

The High Level Delegation of the Heads of State and Government expressed its concerns about the levels of violence, loss of life, and the general state of political instability in the country.

We are however pleased that all parties expressed strong commitment to resolving whatever political problems exist through inclusive and peaceful dialogue. We believe strongly that the solution to Burundi political problems can be attained only through inclusive and peaceful engagement.

The Government of Burundi has committed to the following:

The Government will continue the steps it has begun to open up space for free political activity by the people of Burundi and ensure the freedom of the media.

The AU will deploy one hundred human rights observers and one hundred military monitors to Burundi to monitor the situation.
His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, will convene an inclusive dialogue that will be attended by all important stakeholders as soon as possible to continue the work that he has already started of facilitating peace talks in Burundi.

We urge the international community to support the people of Burundi in their efforts to find lasting peace and development for the country.

In this regard, we urge the international community to restore the provision of assistance to Burundi as requested by the people of Burundi so that they can continue with building their country.

The Delegation will provide a full report to the African Union Chairperson, His Excellency President Idriss Deby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad.

We want to emphasise the importance for all the people of Burundi to participate in the inclusive dialogue that is being facilitated by President Museveni.

The visit has been fruitful and productive. We trust that it will contribute immensely to taking the peace process.

We thank His Excellency President Nkurunziza, the government and people of Burundi for their warm hospitality.

AU HAUT NIVEAU DÉLÉGATION AU BURUNDI CONCLUSION DÉCLARATION

Notre délégation de haut niveau comprenant Ses Excellences les Présidents du Sénégal, Gabon, Mauritanie, Afrique du Sud, et le Premier ministre de l’Ethiopie a achevé sa visite au Burundi.

Nous avons passé les deux derniers jours de réunion avec les différents acteurs qui composent le gouvernement du Burundi, des partis politiques et la société civile sollicitant leurs vues sur la situation politique ici au Burundi.

Nous sommes satisfaits de la participation et les contributions de tous ces secteurs.

La délégation de haut niveau des chefs d’Etat et de gouvernement a exprimé ses préoccupations au sujet des niveaux de violence, de la perte de la vie, et l’état général de l’instabilité politique dans le pays.

Nous sommes cependant heureux que toutes les parties ont exprimé leur engagement fort pour résoudre tous les problèmes qui existent politiques par le dialogue inclusif et pacifique. Nous croyons fermement que la solution aux problèmes politiques du Burundi peut être atteint que grâce à un engagement inclusif et pacifique.

Le Gouvernement du Burundi est engagé à ce qui suit:

Le gouvernement continuera les démarches qu’elle a commencé à ouvrir l’espace pour l’activité politique libre par le peuple du Burundi et de garantir la liberté des médias.

L’UA va déployer une centaine d’observateurs des droits humains et une centaine de moniteurs militaires au Burundi pour surveiller la situation.

Son Excellence le Président Yoweri Museveni, Président de la République de l’Ouganda, convoquera un dialogue inclusif qui sera suivi par toutes les parties prenantes importantes dès que possible pour poursuivre le travail qu’il a déjà commencé à faciliter les pourparlers de paix au Burundi.

Nous exhortons la communauté internationale à soutenir le peuple du Burundi dans leurs efforts pour trouver la paix et le développement durable pour le pays.

À cet égard, nous exhortons la communauté internationale pour rétablir la fourniture d’une assistance au Burundi comme demandé par le peuple du Burundi pour qu’ils puissent poursuivre la construction de leur pays.

La délégation fournira un rapport complet au Président de l’Union africaine, Son Excellence le Président Idriss Deby Itno, Président de la République du Tchad.

Nous tenons à souligner l’importance pour tous les peuples du Burundi à participer au dialogue inclusif qui est facilité par le Président Museveni.

La visite a été fructueuse et productive. Nous espérons que cela contribuera grandement à faire avancer le processus de paix.

Nous remercions Son Excellence le Président Nkurunziza, le gouvernement et le peuple du Burundi pour leur chaleureuse hospitalité.
